Choosing between the RTX 3090 vs 4080 isn’t as simple as picking the GPU with more VRAM or CUDA cores. The RTX 3090 gives you a massive 24GB of GDDR6X memory, while the RTX 4080 has just 16GB.

But the newer Ada Lovelace card can deliver significantly higher gaming performance with better ray tracing, frame generation, and efficiency. So which one actually makes more sense for your money in 2026?

In this comparison, I’ll break down their specs, gaming performance at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, power consumption, Blender performance, features, and real-world use cases so you can choose the right GPU for your setup.

What is the Difference Between RTX 3090 and 4080?

The RTX 3090 and RTX 4080 are high-end NVIDIA graphics cards from different generations. The RTX 3090 uses the Ampere architecture and launched in 2020, while the RTX 4080 uses Ada Lovelace and launched in 2022.

NVIDIA’s high-end GPU lineup has changed significantly across generations. You can also see how performance and specifications differ between Ampere cards in our RTX 3080 vs 3080 Ti comparison.

    Main Architectural Difference

The RTX 3090 uses NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture with second-generation RT cores and third-generation Tensor cores.

The RTX 4080 moves to Ada Lovelace with third-generation RT cores and fourth-generation Tensor cores, alongside higher clock speeds and other architectural improvements.

    Key differences:

    SpecificationRTX 3090RTX 4080
    ArchitectureAmpereAda Lovelace
    CUDA Cores10,4969,728
    VRAM24GB GDDR6X16GB GDDR6X
DLSS SupportDLSS 2DLSS 3 with Frame Generation

The RTX 4080 proves that a GPU with fewer CUDA cores can still be faster because architecture, clock speeds, cache, and newer processing hardware also affect real-world performance.

    Power Consumption

The RTX 3090 has a 350W graphics card power rating, while the RTX 4080 is rated at 320W. NVIDIA lists a recommended 750W to 850W system power supply for the Founders Edition versions of both cards.

    Power comparison:

    • RTX 3090: 350W
    • RTX 4080: 320W
    • Recommended PSU: 750W or 850W
    • RTX 4080 has a 30W lower rated graphics power

This gives the RTX 4080 an efficiency advantage, particularly for users who spend long periods gaming or rendering.

    Size Difference

The RTX 3090 Founders Edition measures 313mm long, 138mm wide, and three slots, while the RTX 4080 Founders Edition measures approximately 304mm long and 137mm wide, also using a three-slot design.

    Before buying either GPU:

    • Check your case’s maximum GPU length.
    • Check available expansion slots.
    • Measure clearance around front fans or radiators.
    • Leave room for the power connector and cable bend.
    • Check the exact dimensions of custom models.

Partner cards can be larger than NVIDIA’s Founders Edition designs.

What is the Price Difference Between RTX 3090 and 4080?

The RTX 3090 launched with a $1,499 MSRP, while the RTX 4080 launched at $1,199. The RTX 4080 therefore had a $300 lower launch MSRP despite being a newer generation GPU.

However, those are historical launch prices. In 2026, used-market pricing can vary widely depending on region, card condition, warranty, availability, and seller.

What are the Specifications of RTX 3090 and 4080?
